The First Four Checks: Free, and Under Two Minutes

  • Thermostat set to HEAT, and set above the room temperature — this sounds insulting right up until it happens to you. A bumped mode switch, a schedule that quietly dropped the setpoint, or a guest who found the buttons will produce a system that looks stone dead. Push the setpoint several degrees above what the room actually reads and listen for the equipment to answer.
  • Thermostat batteries — a lit screen proves nothing. Plenty of thermostats hold a display long after they've lost the power to close the circuit that calls for heat. If yours takes AAs, put fresh ones in before you rule it out, and keep a spare pair in the drawer underneath it for next time.
  • The furnace power switch — it looks exactly like an ordinary light switch, and it usually lives on the unit itself, on the wall beside it, or at the top of the basement stairs.
